Interesting Quote...

'I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.'

Thomas Jefferson, in a letter to the Secretary of the Treasury Albert Gallatin (1802)

Happy Birthday Carl!

Vote for SHMA Awards

Vote early! Vote often!

Voting has begun for the Southern Heritage Music Awards.

Last year's winner of Vintage Album of the Year, Carl Peterson, has been nominated again!

The first round of voting takes place from 2 October until 2 November. You can place a vote once every day. The top five from each category will continue to the second round of voting, where the winner's will be decided. Vote Here!

Carl Peterson's album Songs of the South: Bagpipes and Banjos has been nominated (again) for Vintage Album of the Year. Many songs of the American South came from Scotland and Ireland with the immigrants of the 1700's and 1800's. The tunes were kept and new words were written. On this album Carl Peterson sings these songs, as well as some truly American songs, accompanied by the cross-cultural sounds of bagpipes and banjos. You can read more about, and listen to samples of, this album Here.

The Drifters

The Drifters, a novel by James Michener, is the story of six teenagers in the turbulent 1960s. They end up traveling together, each in search of escape or meaning for their lifes.

One of the characters is Gretchen, a sometime singer and guitar player from Boston, MA. Most of the songs Gretchen sings she learned from Francis J. Child's The English and Scottish Popular Songs (1882-1898) (Child Ballads). The songs were old narrative ballads that often "struck much to closely" to the experiences of those who heard Gretchen sing them.

Carl Peterson recorded these songs on an album called "Drifting with Michener", presented as Gretchen may have sung them, with minimal instrumentation.

When researching the songs, Carl often it found it difficult to find the correct lyrics based on the lines in the book. In the Child Ballads there are often dozen of sets of lyrics for any particular song. Carl took the context of the lyrics in the novel into consideration when choosing the lyrics for his album.

Carl's album includes 14 Songs from the Child Ballads, plus two Scottish ballads that also appear in the novel. You can hear samples and buy this album of beautiful story songs here: The Drifters.

Long Island Festival

A couple weeks ago darachweb spent a lovely day at the Long Island Highland Games in NY. The weather was beautiful! Not too hot, plus we were set up in a shady area so it was very pleasant. Carl Peterson was singing next to the darachweb tent, and that also made the day more enjoyable.

darachweb was very busy throughout the day and did well selling the flags, flag gifts, music and lots more. And Carl met up with a lot of "fans" who were glad to see him again. All in all, a wonderful time was had by all!
